About this stone: Opal

Opal is hydrated silica (SiO₂·nH₂O) that can contain up to about 20% water. It forms when silica-bearing water seeps into cracks in rock and evaporates, leaving silica deposits. Precious opal shows play-of-color, flashes of rainbow colors caused by tiny stacked silica spheres diffracting light; common opal does not.
