Gray Moonstone

Gray moonstone is a color name for natural moonstone feldspar with a gray body color, showing the soft moving sheen called adularescence. GIA notes that moonstone can be gray to nearly black and pictures a gray moonstone from India. It is a trade color name, not a separate mineral, and the sources read do not state which feldspar species such material is.

Origins & sources

The gray moonstone pictured by GIA is from India.

Identification

Moonstone colors vary widely, from white to gray and nearly black, and besides blue, its adularescence can be silver or white. Small "centipede" inclusions are typical of moonstone. To be called moonstone, GIA says, the beauty of the adularescence matters more than the exact feldspar species; labradorite with a multicolored sheen is sold as "rainbow moonstone". A stone without moving sheen, or with fixed glitter, needs testing to confirm it is feldspar.

Care

GIA's advice for moonstone: at Mohs 6 to 6.5 with poor toughness, it can be scratched, chipped or cleaved if knocked against a hard surface, so it suits pendants, earrings and brooches. Moonstone is not typically treated. Clean with warm soapy water; avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
