Dragon Eye Bodhi Seed

Dragon eye bodhi (龍眼菩提) is a plant material, not a mineral and not from the bodhi tree (Ficus religiosa): it is the trade name for a three-carpel form of the Ziziphus fruit stone sold as phoenix eye bodhi (鳳眼菩提). The usual phoenix eye stone has two carpels; stones with three carpels are sold separately as dragon eye.

Identification

The phoenix eye stone normally shows a two-carpel, two-locule 'eye'. Variant fruits with three carpels are called dragon eye bodhi, while four- and five-carpel variants are sold as qilin eye bodhi (麒麟眼菩提) and papaya bodhi (木瓜菩提), so counting the carpels visible on the polished bead separates these names.
