Orange Moonstone

Orange moonstone is a color name for natural moonstone feldspar with a light orange to orange body color, showing the soft moving sheen called adularescence. GIA pictures light orange and orange moonstones from India among the many colors moonstone can have. It is a trade color name, not a separate mineral, and the sources read do not state which feldspar species such material is.

Origins & sources

The light orange and orange moonstones pictured by GIA are from India.

Identification

Moonstone colors vary widely, and besides blue, its adularescence can be silver or white; orange moonstone combines a warm body color with this sheen. Small "centipede" inclusions are typical of moonstone. To be called moonstone, GIA says, the beauty of the adularescence matters more than the exact feldspar species; labradorite with a multicolored sheen is sold as "rainbow moonstone". A stone without moving sheen, or with fixed glitter, needs testing to confirm it is feldspar.

Care

GIA's advice for moonstone: at Mohs 6 to 6.5 with poor toughness, it can be scratched, chipped or cleaved if knocked against a hard surface, so it suits pendants, earrings and brooches. Moonstone is not typically treated. Clean with warm soapy water; avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
