About this stone: Itoigawa Jade

Itoigawa jade is natural jadeite jade (jadeitite, a rock made mostly of the mineral jadeite) from Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan's largest jade source. It formed about 520 million years ago and is described locally as the world's oldest jade. In 2016 the Japanese Association of Mineralogical Sciences chose jade (jadeite and jadeitite) as Japan's national stone; Itoigawa is the locality where gem-quality material is abundant.
