About this stone: Izumo Stone

Izumo stone (Japanese Izumo-ishi) is another name for the deep green hekigyoku (jasper), also called ao-menou ("blue agate"), from Mount Kasen (Kasenzan) in Tamayu-cho, Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. It is a natural stone; mineralogically it is chalcedony, an aggregate of fine fibrous quartz, the same material as agate. From the late Yayoi to the Heian period it was made into magatama (comma-shaped beads) and tubular beads at Tamatsukuri.
