About this stone: Smoky Quartz

Smoky quartz is the grey, brown to black variety of quartz (SiO₂). Its colour comes from natural gamma irradiation acting on traces of aluminium built into the crystal lattice, which creates colour centres. Nearly black smoky quartz is called morion. Smoky quartz can also be produced by irradiating colourless quartz, and this is not detectable with standard tests.
