Dragon Blood Jasper

Dragon blood jasper (also sold as dragon stone or dragon's blood stone) is a trade name for natural green rock with red markings, and it is applied to more than one material. The Western Australian material, recorded by Mindat from the Geological Survey of Western Australia, is a chrome-rich fuchsite chert: microcrystalline quartz colored mid-green by minor fuchsite, sometimes with fine red iron-rich bands and blebs. The same names are also used for an epidote–piemontite rock (epidosite) marketed from South Africa.

What the material is, where it comes from or how it is made, identification and care, from the cited sources.

Properties

Nature Natural rock; trade name covering different rocks, not a single mineral
Composition (Western Australian material) Mostly microcrystalline quartz (chert) with minor muscovite and chromium-bearing fuchsite; red parts are iron-rich
Composition (epidosite material) Green epidote (dominant) with red piemontite and gray quartz
Color Green ground with red veins, bands or spots
Mohs hardness (epidosite material) 6+ to 7 across most of the rock, with some soft spots

Origins & sources

Mindat records the Dragon Stone prospect, about 35 km east-southeast of the Wodgina mining centre in the East Pilbara Shire, Western Australia, known for very large boulders of massive green fuchsite chert in an area of Archean schist and quartzite next to an intrusion of metamorphosed ultramafic rock; it notes that the names are also used for other ornamental green stone in that district. RockTumbler.com reports that the epidote–piemontite "dragon blood" was almost unknown before about 2015, when it was first produced and marketed out of South Africa.

Identification

Despite the name, neither documented material is a jasper in the usual sense: the Australian stone is a chert colored by fuchsite, and the other is an epidote-group metamorphic rock in which the green is epidote and the red is piemontite. Because one trade name covers different rocks, the composition of a given piece cannot be inferred from the name; ask the seller for the source locality or have it tested.

History

RockTumbler.com explains the name by the stone's dragon-green background, on which splashes and veins of red look like blood.
