Imperial Topaz

Imperial topaz is a variety and marketing name for fine natural topaz in warm colors, but it has no single official definition. GIA describes it as medium reddish orange to orange-red, and many dealers require a reddish pleochroic color; Mindat notes the name has expanded over time from pink Russian topaz to orange Ouro Preto topaz and to pinks, reds and peach tones. In Japan, the laboratory association AGL allows "Imperial topaz" as an alias for OH-type topaz.

Origins & sources

GIA states that commercial deposits of imperial topaz are so far found in a single area: Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais, Brazil, where topaz has been mined for more than two centuries. Historically the Ural Mountains of Russia were the leading topaz source and produced the pink gem first called imperial; Mindat also lists imperial topaz from the Sanarka River, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia.

Identification

GIA states there is no official standard for imperial topaz: some dealers use the term for orange to pink to red to purple stones, others reserve it for certain saturated shades, and many insist on a reddish pleochroic color, often seen at the ends of pear and oval cuts. It is the color, not the name, that gives the value. The Japanese AGL usage differs: it links the alias to OH-type topaz rather than to a color. Golden or yellow topaz without red overtones is not imperial, and yellowish brown to orange "sherry" or "precious" topaz is a separate trade term. Citrine and smoky quartz look similar and are frequently misrepresented as topaz. Natural pink topaz is extremely rare; most pink color is produced by heating Cr-bearing yellow to reddish brown Brazilian topaz.

Care

Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale but has poor toughness and one direction of perfect cleavage, so it can chip or split if knocked or handled roughly. GIA and Geology.com advise against steam and ultrasonic cleaning; high heat or sudden temperature changes can cause internal breaks, and liquid inclusions can make a stone fracture when heated. Clean with warm, soapy water. Topaz may be affected slightly by some chemicals. Topaz color is generally stable to light, but prolonged exposure to heat or sunlight might cause fading in some yellow-to-brown stones.

History & culture

History

According to GIA, the name imperial topaz originated in nineteenth-century Russia: the Ural Mountains were then the leading topaz source, and the pink gem mined there was named to honor the Russian czar, with ownership restricted to the royal family. An alternative explanation, popular in Brazil, links the name to Emperor Pedro II's visit to Ouro Preto in 1881 and the gift of a reddish topaz to him. The 97.45-carat Blaze Imperial Topaz is in the collection of the Field Museum of Natural History.
