Lavender Amethyst

Lavender amethyst is a trade name for amethyst, the purple variety of quartz (SiO₂), in a soft, pale lavender tone. The Japanese retailer Pascle uses the name for pale lilac to lavender amethyst (a trade claim). A 2024 study from the China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) describes a new type of amethyst sold as lavender amethyst whose main distinguishing feature is a milky texture, and found that the existing material had been heat-treated.

Material facts

What the material is, where it comes from or how it is made, identification and care, from the cited sources.

Properties

Nature Natural mineral (amethyst quartz); the milky material studied in 2024 was heat-treated
Mineral species Quartz (variety amethyst)
Chemical formula SiO₂
Color Pale lilac to lavender purple; the type studied in 2024 is milky
Treatment Controlled heat treatment (temperature and heating time) to produce the milky white gradient
Mohs hardness 7
Specific gravity 2.65
Refractive index 1.544 to 1.553 (amethyst)

Origins & sources

Lavender amethyst is natural amethyst. According to Liu and co-authors (2024), the milky lavender amethyst on the market has been artificially optimised: amethyst with enough crystal defects is heat-treated at a precisely controlled temperature and heating time to produce the desired milky white gradient.

Identification

Liu and co-authors (2024) found that the milky appearance is caused by light scattering from silica spherules 20–50 nm in size, which form near crystal defects during heat treatment; amethyst suited to this transformation shows specific absorption peaks in the low-temperature infrared spectrum. Its basic gemological constants are those of amethyst (refractive index 1.544–1.553, specific gravity 2.65).

Care

Amethyst colour does not resist high temperatures, and some amethysts lose some colour in daylight, so keep lavender amethyst away from heat and long exposure to strong light.
