White Labradorite

White labradorite is a trade name for natural labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar, with a colorless to white, often transparent to translucent body and a multicolored sheen. The same material is widely sold as "rainbow moonstone"; GIA explains that this is labradorite, not orthoclase moonstone, although the trade accepts the name. Much of it comes from Madagascar.

Origins & sources

GIA describes the labradorite sold as rainbow moonstone as coming from Madagascar, and reports a new, highly transparent type from Andilamena in northeastern Madagascar offered at the 2024 Tucson shows. Geology.com adds that small amounts of transparent labradorite with internal color flash are produced in India.

Identification

Despite the trade name rainbow moonstone, this stone is labradorite, a calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar, while true moonstone is orthoclase, an alkali feldspar; GIA reports a 2024 Madagascar material confirmed as labradorite by Raman spectroscopy. Orthoclase moonstone typically shows a blue or silvery sheen, whereas this labradorite shows flashes of several colors over a light body. GIA also reports an imitation rainbow moonstone assemblage made of plastic-coated gypsum. The Japanese retailer Pascle sells it as white labradorite and notes it is also marketed as rainbow moonstone.

Care

Labradorite has a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5 and two directions of perfect cleavage, so it can break from a sharp knock and scratches more easily than harder gems such as sapphire or agate; Geology.com advises caution in jewelry exposed to impact.
